Why Kyalami Park?

The picturesque Kyalami Boulevard was once part of the original Formula 1 racetrack

A few reasons why Kyalami Park is an ideal location:

  • Its proximity to Pretoria and Johannesburg attracts many businesses.

  • The majestic view from many properties over the Johannesburg, Sandton and Randburg Metropole.

  • High security.

  • Lush landscaped gardens, parks, dams and excellent roads.

  • The Kyalami Downs Shopping Centre is neighbouring the Park and it is very convenient for daily shopping. The restaurants are recommendable for business lunches or after hour meetings.

  • Opposite the Kyalami Park is the residential Kyalami Estate.

THE KYALAMI PARK, A BALANCED ENVIRONMENT

Keeping the environment in balance with the economy that is what the Kyalami Business Park achieved successfully since it was established in the mid 80's. Many businesses are now located in the Kyalami Park and the original layout of the Kyalami Park was successfully sustained.

Hundreds of trees were planted since then and the healthy environment is mainly attributed to trees as well as the lush landscaping of the Kyalami Park with many parks, dams and recreational areas. Trees improve health, beauty and the quality of our communities. They provide shade, reduce air pollution and attract birds into the area.

Usually we would never guess how much a tree contributes to society. Trees have a variety of purposes in the environment. They perform engineering functions, act as noise buffers, light shields, reduce air pollution, help to control climate and limit water pollution. A further benefit is the prevention of soil erosion during heavy rains.

Trees form an important part of the local and national fight against air pollution and against the progress of global warming. By removing carbon dioxide and other pollutants from the air and releasing oxygen back into the air, trees improve air quality. Air pollution levels are measured by the amount of particulate matter in the air, of which high levels are irritating to the respiratory system. Trees aid in removing particulate matter from the air by trapping particles on the exposed surfaces of twigs and leaves. A case study of two streets, one with and one without trees has shown that the street with trees has about 50 times less dust particles in the air than the street without trees.

Noise is often an irritating form of pollution. Sound can be reduced in intensity either by the distance it travels or by collision with a barrier that absorbs the sound waves. Trees can function as such barriers. The degree of transmission of the sound is also based on the humidity of the air, high humidity results in low transmission. Trees also function in the sound reduction process by modifying humidity and climate.

Trees are also beneficial in climate control. Research has shown that properly placed trees and landscaping can save 20 to 25 percent on energy use in buildings. In areas with large trees, there will be a significant effect on temperature and energy use in buildings, particularly during the summer. Without the cooling and moderating effect of trees and green spaces in our environments, urban areas grow hotter and dryer - a heat island effect. Approximately five to 10 percent of the current electric demand in cities is spent to cool buildings just to compensate for the heat island effect. In addition to the increase in temperature, there is an increase in dryness without trees.

Living landscapes improve health and therefore the economy. Trees and green landscapes have a profound effect on our well-being. Spending lunchtime in the park can leave us feeling stimulated and refreshed, ready to face the pace of society. Natural surroundings have the ability to relax us, to lower our heart rate and to reduce stress. Using an urban park to stimulate economic development is not a new idea.

The dam-upgrading-project at our Lotus Park was just recently completed. Many species of birds were already seen on the island in the middle of the dam. It presents an eye-catching view to any onlooker. The Kyalami Business Park offers an excellent balance between economy and environment, which so many of us treasure. This is especially due to the well-organized management of our Chairman, Steve Walker. A high environmental standard is accomplished in the Park, which provides a healthy background for all companies.

Every successful community has an environmental responsibility and we believe the Kyalami Park is doing very well and sets a good example. This is only maintained with the contribution of each of us and thanks is given to everybody who acknowledges this accountability.
